Many take bowling to be a leisure activity, but the game is gaining prominence as a sport. Bowling is quite simple where the player has to knock down pins with a heavy bowling ball. This is the most popular form called pin bowling, which is played on a flat synthetic or wooden surface. However, there is another type, called target bowling, where the player has to throw the ball as close to a target mark as possible, and it is played on synthetic, gravel, or grass surfaces. The variations in pin bowling include five-pin, ninepin, ten-pin, duckpin, and candlepin bowling. In target bowling the variations are boules, petanque, carpet bowls, bocce, and bowls.

The most popular type in North America is ten-pin bowling. The pins used in this sport are the heaviest and largest, and the ball has finger holes to facilitate throwing the large sized ball with one hand. In ninepin bowling, the ball does not have finger holes, and the top of the pins are attached to strings. In duckpin bowling, the pins are squat and short, and the ball is much smaller. On the other hand, candlepin bowling uses the lightest and smallest ball, and very thin and tall pins. Five-pin bowling is mainly popular in Canada, and here the size of the pins is between candlepins and duckpins.
